It is worth a stroll through the historical center, which runs between the Basilica of Santa Maria, built in the 12th century and then renovated in the Baroque style, and the Castle, built during the reign of Spain in the 15th century. The area adjacent to Castovillari has several interesting towns where wine is produced: Saracena, where the Moscato di Saracena variety originated. This wine is mentioned in the writings of the XVI century, at a time when it was highly valued at the papal court. it is made from a special kind of moscato, which may have been imported by the Saracens. Other town is Frascineto, an ancient Albanian colony.
