Discover one of the most remarkable and unique train routes in Italy that is definitely a must-do. If you're looking for an unforgettable Christmas or pre-Christmas weekend destination, this is one of the most original and unconventional choices! Have you ever heard of a panoramic train that passes along the most impressive panoramic places, snow-capped mountains, rises to a height of more than 1000 meters above sea level, stops in authentic towns of Italy and Switzerland, opens panoramas of some of the most beautiful lakes of the two countries? Of course, we are talking about Bernina's red train.
Embarking on the journey from the Italian town of Tirano to the Swiss St. Moritz is a remarkable adventure that can be enjoyed throughout the year, whether it be in the summer or winter seasons. With Christmas and New Year approaching, this route presents a fantastic opportunity for a memorable trip, including a visit to the renowned Christmas markets, with the most notable one located in St. Moritz.
St. Moritz is a favorite place for skiers and winter sports enthusiasts, but even if you are not one of them, there is something to enjoy here: fresh air, beautiful nature, a historic town, delicious food, hotels with SPA and, of course, the Christmas Market itself.
The story of the Bernina Red Train originated in the late 1800s, when engineers came up with an amazing idea: to connect the main centers of the Alpine regions, so that the route would help residents and tourists easily move between them and enjoy unique emotions.
In the late 1800s, Bernina represented a very important connection for the transportation of goods between the North and the South. Transit and trade in the valleys have always been subject to numerous times of suspension in winter, as the weather, frost and heavy snowfall on the pass made it difficult to cross. Because of these inconveniences, the population demanded a better method, faster and more modern transportation. Thanks to these many efforts and excellent technological progress, the famous Bernina Red Train line was born.
Following extensive efforts and numerous years of dedication, the railway commenced operations in 1913, even during the winter months across the entire route, including sections with significant snow cover. In 2000, new panoramic carriages were introduced, quickly gaining popularity among passengers. Finally, on July 7, 2008, the train was honored with the prestigious designation of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I'm planning to go on this trip for Christmas, and you?
