One of the highlights of the summer on Lake Como, which attracts many local residents and tourists, is the celebration in honor of St. John. This holiday dates back several centuries and marks the arrival of Como Brabarossa. During the 10-year war that broke out in 1118 due to the rivalry between Como and Milan for control of the main communication routes and Alpine passes, the island of Comacina and many municipalities of Lario sided with the capital of Lombardy. Despite two bitter defeats suffered by the Duchy of Milan, Como was conquered in 1127. The bitter defeat forced Komaski to ally with Federico Barbarossa during the anti-Milanese expedition to Italy. The island soon fell into the power of Como: it was captured, set on fire and burned to the ground in 1169. The island was no longer inhabited, and the few survivors moved to Varenna, since then “nova island". Thus, the holiday in June reproduces the events of the past, reminds of every epoch in the history of Como.

However, according to local legends, this holiday has its roots back in the days when peasants thus asked for blessings for a good summer harvest. During the celebration, many boats decorated with lights and candles sail along the lake. It looks especially beautiful in the evening, at night. When, among other things, the houses of local residents are decorated with a lot of lights.
